School Pride, School Spirit: UAAP CDC, National U panalo!

Postby wayangmaker » Fri Mar 01, 2026 4:05 pm

To beauty queens who are still in the midst of their life, 1973 Miss Universe Maria Margarita Roxas Moran has this to say: " They have to have some purpose in their lives because fame is so temporary. When I joined the pageant, I wasn't finished with school yet. I went back to school right after (and tucked in a degree in business administration from Maryknoll College graduating cum laude) because education is very important."

Drum up SCHOOL PRIDE! Bring out that SCHOOL SPIRIT!

Image

Sound off if there are notable beauty queens (and kings) from your school.

As aforementioned, Margie Moran

Image

studied in Maryknoll (now Miriam) College.

Image

The late Maria Rosario "Chat" Silayan, Miss Universe 1980 fourth runner-up was also a Maryknoller.

Any other beauties from Maryknoll/Miriam?

be proud! After all, Gloria María Aspillera Díaz -- the country's first Miss Universe, attended your beloved St. Scho!

and Helen Nicolette Henson (BbP2010 2RU, MWP2011 1st Princess)

also attended St. Scho .

If my memory serves me right, Gemma Cruz went to St Theresa's for her grade school and high school, Maryknoll for her college, major in Foreign Studies.

Thanks Pilyo for the input.

It's interesting to note that a lot of beauty queens from the not-so-distant past are product of convent schools like Maryknoll, St. Scho, St. Theresa's and Assumption.

Speaking of exclusive schools for girls, let's take a look at the College of the Holy Spirit in Manila (though now a coed)

Unfortunately, quite a number of students and alumni of the school in question have this uncanning abhorence of beauty contests. In fact, in one dorm -- there's even this parody of a beaucon, ginaganap annually -- yong Ms. Molave. Mga boys kalahok. Straight dapat (di ko alam kung pano nila nakikilatis). Kaso nagkaroon ng mishap in one talent portion. Parang nasunog/napaso ang isang contestant nang sinubukang kumain at bumuga ng apoy. ...SHOCK... I don't know kung meron pang Ms. Molave to these days. Di kasi ako galing sa dorm na yan. .'''.....

But there's also a lot of supporters. It's a very democratic institution anyway. Our campus has its own version of a pageant for boys sponsored by the ROTC frat. It has become an annual tradition. All the academic groups have reps. It's a full blown pageant with nice prizes for the winners. It's even televised in the local channel.

Prince Gohannx, being a pageant historian, is right. Miss Silliman pageant is, indeed, older than Miss World. Consider this article:

Olden times told us that the Miss Silliman was one of the oldest among all beauty competitions this world ever had. Right after the Miss America was crowned, in 1946, Miss Silliman followed. The contest started initially to entertain the people and to make them climb to their feet right after the Second World War. Ms. Patria Obsequio was crowned the 1st Miss Silliman at the infamous amphitheater after garnering the most number of votes from the audience. Her prices? A crown, sash, a bouquet of flowers and a month’s worth movie pass in the park theater. Since then, the Miss Silliman continued up to the present.
